For classification of the Lineolated Parakeet (Bolborhynchus l. lineola) in the systematics of the animal kingdom, I met lots of different statements during my investigations, especially concerning "the next of kin" of the Lineolated Parakeet. However, I will try to offer the general idea about the taxonomy of the Lineolated Parakeet. The Lineolated Parakeet shares the class of the Aves, the birds, with every bird in this world. Regarding the order the taxonomists agree with each other as well. The Lineolated Parakeet belongs to the order of the Psittaciformes, the Parrot-like Birds. But concerning the family there already exist different opinions. Wolters (1975 - 1982) has assigned the Lineolated Parakeets to the "Real Parrots", that means to the family of the Psittacidae. In comparison Howard & Moore (1991) state the family Aratingidae, the "Neo-tropic Parrots". However, in some systematics the "Neo-tropic Parrots" are assigned to the "Real Parrots", as well. Further, the Lineolated Parakeet shares the sub-family of the Forpinae (Parrotlets) with the "Real Parrotlets".
In comparison, Wolters (1975 - 1982) assigns each of the last two parakeet species to an own genus. So, the Sierra Parakeet (Amoropsittaca aymara) is the only representative of the genus Amoropsittaca and the Mountain Parakeet (P. aurifrons) with its 4 sub-species represents the genus Psilopiagon. The latest taxonomic classification integrates both species into the genus Psilopsiagon (Juniper und Parr 1998). It may also be interesting that describing the Lineolated Parakeet for the first time , Cassin called it Psittacula lineola (Prestwich, 1954).
